Site size: 3 acres

Project size: 900 sq. ft.

Program: A new one-bedroom house serves as an alternative residence for the architect/owner.

Location: A lush and wooded lot abuts the famed Old Albany Post Road'itself listed as an historic site'and a natural preserve.

Solution: The shed-roof house, familiar to the regional vernacular, has a main level based on a quadripartite plan. The three main spaces'living area, dining room, and kitchen'wrap around a fourth quadrant, an open deck. The bedroom and bathroom occupy a second floor mezzanine, and spaces at the rear open to the outdoors through large, retractable windows.

Construction and materials: Salvaged Douglas fir walls, cedar roof shingles, ipe wood decking and blue stone paving give the house a simple, natural look that easily fits in with its surroundings.
