San Francisco, California

Site size: 2,500 sq. ft.

Project size:1,800 sq. ft. (front unit, including garage), 1,400 sq. ft. (rear unit)

Program: On the site of an 850-square-foot cottage from the early 1900s, the architects sought to create two new compact, modern, single-family homes in an architecturally conservative area.

Location: San Francisco's Noe Valley neighborhood

Solution: The architects built two detached three-bedroom townhouses, 1,400 square feet each, with a ground floor garage in the unit facing the street. A courtyard separates the front building, which has a main living area on the second floor and sleeping quarters on the third, from the rear, two-story house, with living areas on the top floor and sleeping quarters on the ground floor.

Construction and materials: The wood-framed structures are clad in Cor-Ten, with cement stucco and wood siding. Inside, the architects used drywall with floors of either wood or tile.
