Program: A family wanted a tranquil getaway on the Stockholm archipelago with space for relaxation and guests. They also wanted a vacation house that was different than the typical cottage in the area and relatively maintenance-free.

Solution: Situated on the sloped Baltic coast, Summerhouse Lagnö by Stockholm-based firm Tham & Videgård Arkitekter rests on a rectangular plot between forest and sea. Unlike the area’s wood cottages, the architects constructed two rectilinear, multi-gabled volumes of poured-in-place concrete, joined together by a glazed pavilion. One volume serves as the main house, while the adjacent volume contains a guesthouse. The five peaks of the gabled roof are varied in ceiling heights.

The glazed entrance pavilion provides the main access on the north side of the house. The long, narrow living volume pulls the visitor into a communal living and dining space. From here a continuous band of glass sliding doors on the building’’s southern exposure opens onto a concrete terrace. The back of the rectilinear volume houses the sleeping quarters where sliding ash panels divide them from the living and dining area. The adjacent, separate volume contains a guesthouse, which when not in use, serves as an atelier. Beyond the house is a nearby pier, beach, and access to a secluded sauna.
