Holland Park, London

Project Size: 1,350 square feet

Program: The clients asked Jonathan Tuckey Design to peel back layers of alterations to reveal the original materials used to construct this two-story house, which sits within a strip of historic mews structures dating from the 1860s and ’70s in west London. The clients wanted the house to have a sparse, utilitarian feel to reflect the house’s original function as a stable and service space for the neighboring historic mansions in Holland Park.

Solution: The architects restored the street facade with red brickwork and reinforced theexisting timber frame with steel. Inside, the first floor entry has a red-pigmented concrete floor and serves as both a workshop and display space for the clients’ collection of vintage motorbikes. The remainder of the first floor contains a master bedroom and a passageway leading to a birch-ply staircase ascending to the main living area above.

The second floor, marked with timber studs to identify where the original walls stood, has an open plan, in which a stainless-steel kitchen contrasts with exposed brick walls and a wood-lined study. The architects also exposed the original roof timbers and inserted skylights to brighten the interiors. The renovation cost $522,000.
