Kfar Shmaryahu, Israel

Site Size: 16,146 square feet

Project Size: 6,458 square feet

Program: Architect Pitsou Kedem designed a single-family residence north of Tel Aviv in the affluent town of Kfar Shmaryahu, located near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The clients desired privacy and shade from the often-blistering heat, though they also valued access to the outdoors.

Solution: On the west facade of the two-story concrete structure, smooth white stucco finish alternates with bands of wood louvers. Folding back like garage doors, the louvered screens open out to the entrance courtyard when the weather is mild. The rear of the house, which overlooks the pool to the east, has large glass window walls recessed within the volume of the rectilinear structure. On the ground floor, large glass window walls allow the living and dining room to have access to the sheltered patio by the pool. Above, three of the four bedrooms have direct access to a covered balcony edged by a glass balustrade.
