Sentosa Cove, Singapore

Project Size: 7,000 sq. ft.

Program: The client requested an open floor plan with adaptable spaces connecting to the outdoors as much as possible. The structure is designed so interior walls can be added as needed for future owners.

Solution: The four-story house (plus a rooftop terrace) consists of a reinforced-concrete flat slab and column structure that is clad in reclaimed teak. The main living spaces, including kitchen and dining areas, are located on the second floor. Sleeping accommodations are on the first floor and on the third floor, where a master bedroom has its own balcony overlooking the pool. The roof lifts up toward the south to bring in extra light to the master bedroom, but the glass panes and balcony are also recessed to shelter it from direct sunlight. Cross ventilation, critical for tropical design, maximizes the sense of openness on the second floor, although double glazing also contributes to energy efficiency. Completed in May 2012, the house alternates between compressed spaces and open ones to emphasize views of the distant landscape.
