The architects' design for Sagaponac
House 34 transforms a thickly overgrown plot into a distinct
layered environment by intertwining exterior and interior
spaces and volumes in its program. A series of exterior rooms
surround the housea formal lawn with a raised terrace
and pool to the south, a sunken flower garden to the west,
and an apple orchard across the front yard to the north.
The effort to unify the exterior and
the interior is also demonstrated by the organization of the
single-story wing around the courtyard. The courtyard is glazed
on three sides to visually connect the foyer, kitchen, and
living and dining rooms. The bedrooms and study are located
in a two-story wing that opens onto the sunken flower garden.
House and garden are perceived as a unified whole through
careful proportioning of interior and exterior volumes and
circulation.
The appearance of the exterior is meant
to be taut and minimal. The simple timber frame and flat roof
construction is sheathed with clear cedar siding. Large glass
sliding doors and inward-opening French doors and casement
windows provide sleek openings in the walls. Steel frames
are used for their minimal and elegant details.
