Composed of two simple rectangular volumes
forming an L-shaped plan, Sagaponac House 14 frames not only
its occupants view of the landscape, but also their social
interactions. The house's main public space is the swimming
pool area that includes multileveled terraces and a covered
porch with a shower. This space, accessible and visible to
all other parts of the house, and at times visible to the
neighbors and the street, exhibits the house's dramatic quality.
It becomes a stage for action and display.
In fact, the design of the house was
inspired by Alberto Giacometti's sculpture, Figure in a
Box between Two Boxes which are Houses. Like that sculpture,
the house features a large opening within each rectangular
volume. These openings appear and disappear via a system of
metal shutters mounted on the exterior walls. The metal shutters
act not only as shields against intruders when no one is at
home, but also alternately reveal and conceal private and
public hidden motivations and exchanges within and beyond
the house.
