Sited in the center of a densely wooded,
1.3-acre lot, this one-story house offers a secluded retreat
where building and landscape come together in tranquil relationship.
The house is composed of a living room/dining area with flanking
bedroom suites, and a studio with adjacent service spaces.
Both areas adjoin a garden court featuring a screened porch
and sheltered walkway joining the two areas.
The fully glazed end walls of the living
room/dining area provide abundant daylight. Along one side
of the space, glass-walled galleries flank a central fireplace
that opens to a broad veranda overlooking a lawn and swimming
pool that nestles in the woods. Along the opposite side, kitchen
and library alcoves feature a large square window, located
directly across from the fireplace, with a view into the garden
court. Thus, the living/dining area mitigates between the
two realms, inviting its occupants to enjoy both the social
realm of the lawn and swimming pool and the contemplative
realm of the garden.
The clerestory-lit studio, in contrast,
belongs to the realm of contemplation. The large cubic volume
encloses a spacious workroom designed for an artist, writer,
or composer. It encroaches boldly on the garden court, interrupting
its circular berm and ring of flowering trees. Walls and ceiling
of the wood-framed house are surfaced with tongue-and-groove
cedar boards, and windows, door frames, floors and decks are
composed of teak throughout the house.
