Four quadrants divide this house into
public and private zones, each of which features an individual
garden integrating the interior with the surrounding landscape.
A system of modular furniture units provide the structural
system of the house, which also provide spatial division and
storage (closets, bookcases, cabinetry, lighting, and packaged
HVAC units). The furniture is prefinished on the interior
and exterior. If a furniture unit composes an exterior wall,
sheathing is applied for waterproofing and insulation. Shigeru
Ban's development of structural furniture began in 1983 and
to date four furniture houses have been built in Japan and
China. The remaining building systems include site-built floor
slabs, roof, and curtain wall glazing. In total, the planning
combines open interior and exterior spaces and inventive,
simple building components proportioned to the human scale.
