Inn at Price Tower

Bartlesville, Okla.
Wendy Evans Joseph Architecture

Architectural Record, February 1956 coverage of the Price Tower. Click here to open a PDF of the article. (PDF: 2MB, 9 pages)

The Price Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright's only completed skyscraper, has become a hotel. When the building opened 47 years ago, RECORD covered it in depth, with essays by the owner of the building, his son (who also took the photographs), the architectural historian Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., and by Wright himself.

In his essay, Wright says that the skyscraper should be the product of technology and artistry, and suggests that the American skyscraper may be less at home in the city, where it symbolizes "landlordism," in Wright's words—and more at home in less likely places such as Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

To read all of Wright's essay, the other coverage, and to see the original photography, download the article at right.
