The house to be built at Sagaponac Lot
30 is one of 34 homes commissioned by New Yorks developer
Coco Brown to occupy a unique subdivision in the Hamptons
of Eastern Long Island. Browns goal is to create an
"anti-tract" where each house is a unique expression
of an individuals vision. Brown asked his friend Richard
Meier to assist in selecting architects that ranged in age,
accomplishment, and design philosophy to plan one house each.
A second goal was to create a subdivision of comfortable mid-sized
homes at a reasonable budget. Lot 30 is a 3.3-acre site, long
and lean in shape.
The architect raised the house onto
a two-foot high wooden plinth to reach up for the sunlight
through the dense forest. Budget dictated a simple partia
twenty-foot-wide, double-rectangle plan-form connected by
a thin glass hall surrounding a central courtyard. The narrow
width of the rectangular volumes economizes on structural
costs due to repetition of beam and joist sizes while gaining
openness and view along both longitudinal elevations.
The two-story mass is wrapped in a reddish-orange
stained cedar frame that pays homage to the spectacular fall
color of New England. Within this frame, the lower floor predominantly
houses the "public" spaces. The second floor has
three bedrooms, each with a wide balcony. The project is intended
to be minimalista mirror of the forest it sits withina
reflection of nature.
