Positioned like sculptures on opposing
ends of the lot, two buildings to accommodate an extended
family establish a powerful formal relationship with each
other. Conceived as outdoor living rooms, they become significant
spatial features in relation to the site. The result is a
composition of interlocking indoor and outdoor spaces arranged
to provide distinction without compromising continuity.
The front house has solar panels, a guest
bedroom in the basement with an underwater view of the pool,
and a master bedroom on the second floor. There is a study
on the second floor that overlooks the living space on the
ground level, which has sliding glass doors on three sides
that open completely to the courtyard and pool, making the
space an indoor/outdoor porch.
The rear house has one bedroom loft located
on the second floor overlooking the ground floor public space
and opening onto a private deck that overlooks the garden.
The ground level public area has sliding glass doors that
open to the courtyard and pool. There is a roof deck accessible
to both houses, and a lap pool is shared and acts as a divider
for the individual private courtyards for each house.
The indigo colored, crystalline solar
panels gesture to the street, identifying this project as
distinct from its neighbors. Both buildings juxtapose concrete,
sheet metal, metal screen, and glass. Transparent merges into
opaque; solid becomes void; concrete abuts glass; earth gives
way to water. Mass plays a formative role in the choreography
of a continuous flow of space.
