Program: A10,000-square-foot urban spa.
Design concept and solution: Located in historic Montreal, Scandinave Les Bains Vieux- Montréal is designed to engage the body’s senses through thermal therapy. The former warehouse building, reconstructed half a century ago after extensive fire damage,, now features a program for healing and relaxation. The program of the ground-level spa was created to evoke the sensations of hot and cold. White angular masses and ivory marble mosaics mimic glacial topography; while heated black slate cantilevered benches and angled dark ceilings evoke volcanic geology. Opalescent glass allows natural light into the building while maintaining a sense of privacy and tranquility.
