Program: A 5,000-square-foot architecture office.
Design concept and solution: When the 12-person Manhattan architecture firm, Michael Neumann Architecture, had outgrown its office, a converted two-bedroom apartment, they sought a new space with more room that was close to public transportation and provided natural light and fresh air. The firm selected an upper story loft space that would maintain the strengths of small office communal interaction, while also providing for privacy, conference rooms, and storage space. The loft windows and skylights provided ample light, while the salvageable maple floor, brick walls, exposed timber, and office furniture enabled the firm to work with existing materials. Three white-stained poplar offices house senior staff and a conference room located along the length of the loft. Wide sliding doors can close the offices for private conference calls and quiet workspace. The main office space was designed for flexible use with 20 linear feet of sliding floor-to-ceiling pin-up panels, mobile worktables, lounge seating, a design library, an open kitchen, and a foosball table.
