Client: Barnard College

Completion date: February 2010

Program: A 98,000-square-foot, seven-level building that includes architecture and painting studios, exhibition galleries, a reading room, classrooms, faculty offices, a café, a dining room, a green roof, and, below ground, a 500-seat performance and event space as well as a 100-seat black-box theater.

Solution: Working within Barnard's dense, brick-dominated campus, the architects set out to design a multistory building that would feel like one continuous space. To get around the tendency of tall buildings to separate people and activities by floor, they staggered a sequence of double-height atria to form a diagonal that cuts through the building like a staircase of rooms. Visitors standing in the top floor galleries look down onto a cascade of spaces (library, dining room, café), which are further unified by long carpet tiles in changing hues of red. To move between floors, visitors use a cantilevered, glassed-in staircase that juts out from the west side of the building like one long, zigzagging bay window. The center's glass-panel exterior riffs on the campus's brick motif but softens it: the panels—some fritted, others backed with shadow boxes—range from a translucent dark red to clear, changing color with with light and smoothing the building's edges.

Total construction cost: $57 million
