Program: A new two-story, 33,500-square-foot rehabilitation center that consolidates outpatient services, which had been scattered among existing buildings on the institute's campus. The gym and lobby span both levels; the first floor includes a diabetic foot clinic and a physicians' clinic. The second floor houses a seating and mobility clinic, a rehab technology office, a wheelchair shop, and an orthotics and prosthetics clinic and fabrication workshop.

Design Concept and Solution: Charged with building a new gateway to the campus, the architects wanted the design to echo the institute's early-20th-century brick-and-column buildings while gesturing to the technological advancements of modern rehabilitative medicine. They also aimed to create an uplifting environment for outpatients, allowing them to navigate the building independently and enjoy the landscape and nearby creek. The Stanley Beaman & Sears team chose brick that matches the original, and their steel-columned walkways riff on the columns of the campus buildings. A tensile fabric canopy at Blanchard Hall's entrance both recalls the institute's old porticoes and evokes the technology of modern prosthetics and orthotics with its threaded steel rods and steel cables. Inside, the two-story lobby and gym—bounded by glass on two and three sides, respectively—maximize natural light and views to the tree-lined creek. To further bring nature into patients' routines, the architects connected Blanchard Hall with the parking lot via a wheelchair-accessible bridge spanning the stream.
