Waves roll in this unique adaptive reuse of a torpedo factory

An existing building that was originally built as a torpedo factory during World War II, and later served as a shopping mall, was converted to a Christian fellowship center for a 5,000-member congregation. The structural bay module and industrial characteristics of the space were not fitting for celebratory worship. The undulating shape of the ceiling, derived from the original factory skylight configuration, was unusual. However, the spatial/volumetric proportions offered great potential.

One of the challenges the design team faced was working with the users to think "out of the box." Their strong preconception was to ignore the volumetric opportunities of the existing saw-tooth roof monitor profile and install a flat lay-in ceiling. The architect responded to the challenge of these difficult existing conditions by using the wave-like ceiling as the major design element in the project. The new facility includes classrooms, function spaces, conference rooms, business offices, and a television production studio.

Three existing movie theaters were combined to create the central worship hall. Four central columns were removed to provide unobstructed views within the hall. The main floor is flat to allow for multiple seating arrangements and multipurpose activities. The ceiling planes help define the seating areas, create interest, establish rhythm, and break down the scale of the hall. At the same time they function practically to organize and screen the mechanical systems and lighting and sound systems required for broadcast TV production. The overall effect is that of a dynamic and uplifting space for celebration.
