Program: The 50,000-square-foot academic building contains a 66-seat lecture hall, classrooms, computer studios, an undergraduate lounge, and offices for staff, faculty, and graduate students. It houses the Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering, which focuses on economics, and the Center of Information Technology Policy, which unites researchers in the fields of computer science and social science.
Design concept and solution: Fostering collaboration, responding to context, and promoting sustainability were essential to the design of Sherrerd Hall. The building’s Modernist form, proportions, and patterned glass facade are drawn from surrounding buildings, such as the 1976 Mudd Library, designed by Hugh Stubbins, and the 2001 Friend Center, by Harry Cobb. Its green roof is the first on the Princeton campus. Other green features include an energy-efficient curtain-wall system, storm water controls, and bike parking facilities. Inside, classrooms and offices line the perimeter of the building, where floor-to-ceiling windows provide views and natural light. A three-story atrium fosters casual interaction between students and professors. Artist Jim Isermann designed a chandelier sculpture for the atrium stairwell.
