Program: A 139,000-square-foot academic center with offices, a library, classrooms, and a restaurant.
Design concept and solution: The Bernoulliborg building houses the mathematics and physics departments of Groningen University and Hanze Polytechnic. Due to time constraints and the flexible interior program requested by the client, the architects chose a steel load-bearing structure, which is exposed in both the interior and exterior design. The public functions—library, reception, and restaurant—are housed in the transparent ground-floor volume. Two inner courtyards admit natural light into the core of the building. On the exterior, the upper portion of the building is clad in blue semi-transparent glass.
