Woodbury University Architecture Studio Building

Burbank, California
Rios Clementi Hale Studios

Exposed mechanical systems provide a didactic studio for architecture students.

The newest architecture studio on Woodbury University’s campus perimeter is the most visible building on campus. The 19,000-square-foot two-story building exterior is an melange; the public facade is a multi-toned array of sundry patterned concrete blocks. The campus elevation is divided into a portion of concrete blocks, and corrugated metal siding. To mediate the public view and private facade of campus, a curvilinear concrete block wall delineates the boundary and acts as a sound barrier to a busy street.

The programmatic space for students exists on two floors, connected by an exterior staircase. On each floor, 5, 500 square feet of studio space adjoins 1,500 square feet of critique space. The studios provide each student approximately 35 square feet of individual workspace.

Interior mechanical systems and construction materials are exposed, and gypsum drywall provides pin-up surfaces, stopping short of the structural ceiling to expose the outer concrete masonry unit walls. These revealed materials and systems serve as instructional tools for teachers.

A double-height, multi-purpose space is differentiated from the mass of the building with a high glass facade that acts as a beacon to the south. A custom olive leaf patterned graphic film covers the glass. The film not only filters sunlight, but also symbolizes the history of the site: the campus was formerly an olive orchard.

At nearly 1,700 square feet, the multi-purpose room provides additional critique space and a flexible area for lectures and exhibits. A large, corrugated metal bi-fold door opens the space to an outdoor courtyard, and to the campus.
