With over 205,000 square-feet of space,
Rennebohm Hall features a two-story student activity space,
a research laboratory tower, and a library. The needs and
uses of these three elements delineated the program of this
state-of-the-art education and research space. The two-story
base establishes a public edge along a new quadrangle, the
glazed library volume floats above the base creating a serene
edge along a pond, and the laboratory tower is placed on top
of the base creating a massing identity for the school of
pharmacy in accordance with the scale of the surrounding structures.
The exterior building language reflects
internal functions. Curtain walls enclose public spaces while
maximizing day-lighting and views of Lake Mendota. A grid
of punched openings in a solid masonry volume reflects the
modular nature of the laboratories and the rational process
of the research occurring within them. The generic research
laboratory space is flexible and can be adapted to support
research in synthetic chemistry, molecular and cellular biology,
pharmacology, and pharmaceutics.
This facility is intended as the first
step toward the implementation of an integrated health sciences
complex on the west campus. The School of Pharmacy is a drug
development facility that brings all elements of drug discovery
and development together. The education of pharmacy students
is integrated with the education of medical and nursing students,
thus preparing students for the multi-disciplinary approach
of healthcare delivery.
