As Continental Airlines’ most important hub, Terminal C at Newark International Airport is a key component in the company’s business plan to expand. In a joint venture with TAMS Consultants, the architects are nearing completion of the renovation and expansion of this existing hub, as well as designing the new, 325,000 square-foot Concourse Three which, with two others, radiates from Terminal C. Special consideration was given to the use of natural light, which reaches deep into the terminal. The architects addressed the experience of arrival and departure by means of a continuously skylighted roof: outbound passengers see the sky, while inbound passengers see reflected light on softly scalloped roof elements. A new U.S. Customs and Immigration facility to accommodate arriving International passengers was added, and the terminal was replanned, nearly doubling facilities for outbound service.

In order to allow passengers to make connecting flights without having to recirculate through security, a new curved airside corridor was designed to run the length of the terminal and serves as the formal and functional link between the main terminal and the three concourses. The continuous glazing along the north wall of the corridor provides ample natural light and offers views toward the aircraft operations.

The architect also designed a new international arrivals facility, including arrivals, baggage claim, and Federal inspection facilities, immediately to the west of the terminal. Of note, the so-called "sterile corridor," the usually overlooked secure passageway from the plane to immigration inspection, is encased in glass and passes through the airy, naturally lit upper level of Concourse Three.
