Program: A 24,000-square-foot city bus center including a three-story building with a climate-controlled waiting area, retail spaces, and transit police offices; 15 covered outdoor bus bays; and a taxi stand. Later phases of the project will incorporate regional bus service and connect to Detroit’s People Mover.

Design concept and solution: The project aims to encourage the use of public transportation and enhance its image through an economical but well-designed structure.

Set on a 2.4-acre slice of land just outside Detroit’s center, the new transit hub seeks to draw the city outward and foster development beyond the core. The small parcel of land restricted the size of the building, so the PB team designed an angular structure that makes the most of its size: they tapered the lines of the corridors to make them feel longer, for example, and slanted the upper wall of the atrium forward to emphasize its height. To shelter the bus bays outside, PB’s partner FTL Design Studio created dramatic white canopies that rise 50 feet in the air like a set of sails, giving the center an iconic presence in the cityscape. Serving as an alternative to an indoor bus bay with costly ventilation systems, the canopy features a durable yet translucent fabric that naturally ventilates while also letting light through and collecting rainwater.
