Program: The first two lines of Dubai’s metro system, combining 47 stations and 43 miles of track to form the longest fully automated rail system in the world.

Design concept and solution: The new metro line relieves traffic congestion and connects the city’s business and cultural centers with innovative and iconic stations.

Adopting a smooth shell form for the stations, Aedas designed the metro lines to call to mind strings of pearls, evoking the country’s tradition of pearl diving. The steel shell structure saves on materials—no internal supports are necessary—and has an expansive feel, with a lustrous, uninterrupted curved ceiling. The shell design also allows stations to capture the Gulf breeze. Glazing lets in some daylight while guarding against excessive solar gains. Insulated cladding reduces cooling loads to help curb energy use.

Total construction cost: $4.2 billion
