Consolidated Rental Car Facility and Parking Garage

Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Spillis Candela DMJM

One of the largest parking structures in the country provides space for 12 car rental companies plus four stories of public parking at a busy airport.

The 4.4-million-square-foot Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CRCF) at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is one of the largest structures of its kind in the U.S. The master plan for the CRCF accommodates a future hotel as well as a proposed people mover that will connect to the main airport terminal, and a future inter-modal transit center. Current studies are now underway for the adjacent inter-modal transit center, which will link regional transportation stations at the airport and seaport (Port Everglades) to the Ft. Lauderdale public transit system. DMJM Design’s Miami office (Spillis Candela DMJM) is part of the ongoing feasibility study team.

The CRCF provides facilities for 12 rental car companies. Its nine stories accommodate 9,000-plus cars and a full range of rental car concessions and visitor parking. Connections to the airport terminals are achieved via pedestrian bridge and a dedicated busway for shuttles. The design provides for a future automated people mover and an additional floor of parking. The garage consists of five stories of rental car concessions and four stories of upper-level airport public parking. Public parking floors accommodate 1,200 cars per floor for a total of 4,800 passenger parking spaces. Level one of the facility includes a maintenance area (quick turnaround area) with fueling, washing, vacuuming and staging for up to 1,000 rental cars.

Levels two, three and four include customer counter areas and “ready” spaces (ready return area), with 1,000 cars per level. Level five includes additional storage and an overflow area to accommodate 1,100 to 1,200 cars. Functioning as an extension of the airport’s ground access system, the nine-level facility provides easy access for vehicles and pedestrians to the auto rental companies, daily and hourly parking levels, and pedestrian transfer areas. Consolidating functions and developing the garage, as an extension of the surface transportation access required a comprehensive approach to the layout of the floors, spaces, drive aisles, vertical transitions, rental facilities, and vehicular and pedestrian circulation.
