Vestibule sculpture captures retailer’s artistic aspirations

Located in an upscale suburban shopping center, the Dallas Flagship Store is, at 88,000 square feet, the third largest Barneys New York flagship store. A glowing sculptural steel and glass entry vestibule, embedded in its 35-foot-long white brick facade, expresses the retailer’s penchant for artistic brands. The design team, comprised of Gensler and Barneys’ in-house staff, intended this structure to function as both an entrance into the store—and to capture the essence of the brand. Its glass curtain wall encloses a steel sculpture designed by artist John-Paul Philippé. A bold cantilevered-steel slab in Barneys' signature red projects outward to create an elegant awning that balances the composition and shelters the valet parking waiting area.

Inside the store, spiraling between two sales floors, a central staircase—a classic Barneys’ motif reinterpreted with a new, sculptural feeling—provides a directional reference point for shoppers. Supported by a single steel beam, the wood and limestone structure appears light and transparent; midway down, a platform doubles as an ad hoc runway for fashion events or merchandise displays. Stair railings feature glass panels etched with motifs that reference the exterior sculpture.

The interior finishes include end-grain oak flooring, hammered steel, Lucite, ombred-limestone mosaics, Italian plaster walls, and black-stained oak with gold cerusing. Carter Kustera, Terrence Gower, Jonathan Adler, and other designers created sculptures, ceramics, murals, and other custom-designed works of art that dot the space. Philippé, moreover, designed the laminated glass stair railing whose pattern echoes the abstract forms in the entrance vestibule.
