Swooping forms and lighting reinforces sense of motion at this transit-oriented mall

Eastgate Berlin, as its name suggests, occupies a prominent site at the eastern edge of Berlin—easily accessible by the city’s main rail and highway networks. At the shopping center’s northwest corner, site of its main entry, the roof sweeps down to serve as a wrapper around the facade, then extends north to form a deck for the transit hub. Its streamline form suggests motion—a sensation heightened by LED lighting at night.

The shopping center’s roof/facade wrapper is comprised of highly reflective aluminum panels. Below it, along the ground floor, red, yellow, and orange lacquered panels highlight the fenestration; the reinforced concrete structure is dyed to signify different program elements, such as emergency exits. By contrast, camouflage netting, intertwined with hanging plants, covers a 1,400-car parking deck nearby.

The 533,000-square-foot shopping center contains 150 stores, professional office space, a food court with seating for 400 people, and an open-air events plaza. The architects carried the exterior color scheme indoors—as well as a touch of the playful lighting. Computer-regulated dimmers and color gels allow the mall managers to create a variety of atmospheres and moods to suit the time of day and season of the year.
