This simple shop occupies a projecting
rectangular lot on Orchard Road in Singapore. Song and Kelly's
strongest wish for the space was flexibility--no excess and
few details. The earthy palette of colors and materials are
carefully coordinated; large, uniform slabs of sandblasted
ivory Silstone pave the ground on one corner of the shop,
while the rest of the floor is concrete punctuated with stainless
steel sleeves at regular intervals that serve as receptacles
for the pivot mechanism of the display cases. There is no
conventional furniture but a sensuous concrete ledge lines
the entire wall of the Silstone edge of the shop, complimenting
the floor of the same material on the other side.
Four orthogonal mobile cases, crafted
in mild-steel frame and braced with slats of Nyatoh--a southeast
asian handwood--and sandblasted glass, define the space of
the boutique. Mounted on castors, these cases can be oriented
in a number of unique ways, pivoting around points inscribed
in the floor and significantly changing the configuration
of the space. The original position of these cases with the
wooden slats or the back facing the entrance, conceals the
clothes, revealing them only in silhouette.
Song and Kelly's agenda is in fact much
more than just merchandising clothing, but includes showcasing
the works of others in their shop. Well appointed in its generous
flow of space and easily transformed, the shop is primed for
art installations, video, even yoga classes--it is a space
that allows for reinvention.
