Program: BEI is a 3,450 square foot restaurant situated in the basement of the Kengo Kuma-designed hotel, Opposite House.

Design concept and solution: The challenge for NHDRO was to create a sense of openness in the basement location, while delineating public and private dining areas. The central communal dining area features vertical walnut wood slats spaced to give the illusion of expansive walls. Five oak-clad private dining rooms surround the public space. Dark grey slate floors, blackened bronze doors, and lacquer cabinetry are illuminated with exposed light bulbs that are whimsically situated throughout the main dining area.
