Program: XIV is a 5, 932-square-foot fine dining restaurant.
Design concept and solution: Formerly a Sunset Boulevard residence that had been transformed into a nightclub, XIV now houses a fine dining restaurant. The existing ceilings were under 8 feet high; 12 feet of structural clearance was needed for air conditioning and lighting. To keep the original roofline in tact—with its residential hips and gables—the roofline was supported with a series of steel moment frames. The existing floor was demolished and excavated four feet to achieve the proper floor to ceiling height. Designer Philippe Starck describes the interior to be “something like my auntie’s library,” a fusion of European chateau and modern elements.
