The restoration and adaptive reuse of a cherished campus building has returned an 1895 brick landmark to its original splendor, and transformed the building into a vital and accessible new home for the Alumni Association.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this "Old Main" of the campus was the tallest structure in Arizona when built in 1895. Rich in tradition, the facility has been the site of a century of historic, social, and cultural events, including Teddy Roosevelt's remarks from the building's north stair during the dedication in 1911 of the dam bearing his name.

The lack of original drawings and records of detailing, and years of gouging and remodeling, created formidable challenges. The $5.7 million restoration project removes an unfortunate addition built in the 1950's, while protecting the structural integrity of the building and the recently renovated ground floor. The original 1895 exterior and north façade, with its two balconies and monumental stair, are fully restored and recreate a symbolic focal point.

The interior spaces are enhanced by a new lobby and handsome oak stair in their original location at the north side. The splendor of the grand ballroom on the third floor, with its pressed-metal vaulted ceiling, is brought back to life for receptions and meetings. The third floor also houses a new boardroom, library, archives, and offices. Second floor offices were reconfigured around the perimeter to maximize natural light and exterior views.

In a unique development partnership, the restoration was a cornerstone for a larger capital fundraising campaign. Donor recognition and in kind contributions of material, labor, and craftsmanship were integrated in a "labor of love." The state historic preservation office recognized the project as a model for preservation.
