The Little Village Family Resource Center
is a two-story addition to an existing facility that provides
early childhood care for 270 children, infant through age
12. The new addition allows the center to strengthen its offering
to the community by improving the quality and range of family
support services, including childcare, after-school programs,
parenting education, job training, and counseling. This community
asset offers a holistic approach to care for the entire community
and its families.
The existing facility resides on a small
site, which posed limitations to the necessary expansion.
Placing the new structure away from the existing one created
an outdoor courtyard that functions as a protected play area
for infants. The conference room and indoor play room are
designed as semicircular forms with floating ceiling planes,
which serve to identify the entry to the building. The outdoor
courtyard between the entry and indoor play room allows for
long views through the center, creating a spacious feeling.
Patterned masonry and colorful awnings create a playful tie
to the older building. Classrooms are light filled and designed
for flexibility.
