Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater
A new concert hall provides an iconic home for a Southern California orchestra.
The Orange County Performing Arts Center has expanded an existing arts complex, adding the new 2,000-seat Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and the 500-seat multipurpose Samueli Theater to the site. The concert hall is the permanent home of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and Chorale Group and also will host touring orchestras and artists.

In addition to performance spaces, the expansion houses rehearsal rooms, a dedicated space for the resident symphony orchestra that includes a kitchen and dining facilities, a centralized box office, administrative offices, VIP suites, and support areas.
Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects organized the complex around a large “Plaza of the Arts” and intended it to be an elegant and vibrant sculptural form that glows in the Southern California light. On its south, east, and west sides, the building is a composition of solid limestone forms, making reference to Cubist sculpture. The exception is the entrance to the smaller theater, whose tall glass lobby creates a large and dramatic marquee. The north side, naturally protected from the sun, is all glass. This is the main entrance to the new concert hall. The undulating wall of glass creates an ever-changing composition of reflections, transparencies and highlights.
An acoustical canopy marks the interior of the concert hall. Silver leaf, applied to the gently curving ribbons of the canopy, forms a shimmering ceiling that reflects the color and movement of the musicians and performers on the stage below. The ribbons of the canopy relate to the curving forms of the concert hall balconies, the lobby ceiling, and the glass façade.
The pipes for the organ are also silvery—some formed of metal, and others wood covered with silver leaf. The silver pipes and the canopy were designed so that the canopy will appear almost as an extension of the organ itself, reinforcing the fluid movement of the design as it relates to the flow of sound.
