Peoria Center for the Performing Arts
The design of an Arizona performing arts center reflects its southwestern location.
The Peoria Center for the Performing Arts in Peoria, Arizona, is a new community arts and education center conceived as a gateway pavilion in a newly created civic plaza. Rising on a prominent site at a major intersection, it acts as catalyst for private redevelopment of the city’s commercial center.

Featuring a striking profile, sculptural roof, and materials of the southwest, and designed by Westlake Reed Leskosky, the 21,000-square-foot project includes a 280-seat theater, 80-seat black box experimental theater, dressing rooms, offices, two large classrooms/workshops, gallery and lobby.
The center draws upon the forms, materials, textures, and palette of the southwest, and considers its harsh climate. The building is anchored to the desert landscape by concrete masonry walls cast from indigenous aggregates. An organic roof of staggered copper shingles echoes the forms of the mountains, and reduces the large scale of the stage house. The roof provides shade for the amply glazed lobby, and at night, the underside is lit to provide a soft, ambient glow. Loading and service areas, while more subdued, are handled with dignity, ameliorating any sense of a back to a building that is highly visible from all angles. Inside, simple, elegant materials, such as natural wood in dark-espresso stain, reinforce understated richness and non-ornamental simplicity that characterize the building.
Organized for maximum efficiency and flexibility, the facility is zoned with performance and educational components, each with independent public use and access. Lobby and public amenities serve simultaneous and independent use for the two venues. Support areas and loading dock serve both theatres. Flexible seating in the main audience chamber allows for varying areas and audience sizes.
State-of-the-art engineering theater technology includes computerized dimming and stage lighting control, variable speed and motorized stage rigging, and main stage orchestra pit for up to 17 musicians.
