The original Roy Thomson Hall featured concrete on both the interior and exterior and the large volume of space in the auditorium. This large concrete volume lacked intimacy and proved to be acoustically problematic for the performers and patrons. The shortcomings in the acoustics of the auditorium prompted the development of an enhancement program to transform the venue into a world-class concert hall and multipurpose facility.

This project sought to remedy the hall's acoustic problems by decreasing the volume of the hall. This was accomplished by bringing in the side walls with a series of volume reduction bulkheads to create a smaller, more rectilinear sound chamber; and by lowering the ceiling with a pair of adjustable acoustical canopies to allow the hall's volume and sound distribution to be optimized for each performance. Other interventions included the addition of retractable sound absorbent banners on the bulkheads for use during amplified performances; a new, more resonant stage floor; and surround walls at the stage that enhance the acoustic environment for performers.

The material palette of Canadian white maple created an acoustically warm and physically intimate space. The materials altered the aesthetic impact of the space by revitalizing the auditorium's original concrete interior. New center aisles, parterre seating, and private boxes increase the level of intimacy, comfort, and accessibility for patrons.
