Thiais Bus Centre Administrative Building
The concrete-clad Thiais Bus Center is designed to fit into its industrial surroundings, but vivid colors of glazing within the simple grey exterior make this building stand out from the rest.
Designing the Thiais Bus Center provided ECDM with the opportunity to express a practical and reflective approach to architecture. The challenge to the architects was two-fold; on the one hand, they were required to meet strict specifications, which included housing monitoring, management, reception, and meeting and relaxation facilities for the 800 bus drivers and administrative staff of this busy bus center. And on the other hand, it required experimentation with new materials; including Ductal, a grey sheet of concrete with a Lego-like texture. Ductal encompasses the exterior building in its entirety; the rounded edges curve to the roof, which is also clad in Ductal, and the continuity of the surface that wraps around the ground level tarmac gives the illusion that the building is growing upwards from the pavement.

This monolithic-type building is set in the industrial area south of Paris. The glazing that interrupts the concrete façade with different color schemes distinguishes the various indoor areas and allows generous lighting to penetrate the interior. The colorful reflective glazing—blue, green, yellow, and orange—contrasts sharply with the grey concrete façade, while reflecting the bold colors displayed on surrounding shop signs and billboards.
