PNC Realty Services wanted a new e-business center for TechWorks@PNC that was stimulating, energetic, and not corporate in feel. Located within a turn-of-the-century, former railway building on the edge of Pittsburgh's cultural district, the innovative renovation retains some of the original building elements.

A custom-designed desk from which two angled sheets of frosted glass are suspended creates a gentle curve in the reception area. Pendent light fixtures complement the building's original timber beams. Brick exterior walls are left exposed around the perimeter of the space, while architectural details are primarily of wood and tempered glass. "Green" elements incorporated in the design include the carpet tile, sheet linoleum flooring, MDF board, and various sustainable fabrics.

An oval-shaped conference room is the focus of the space, detailed with angled plaster walls and a suspended sailcloth ceiling element. This oval creates a geometry from which adjacent areas are projected.

The general working area is comprised of reconfigurable workstations that can be grouped into a variety of arrangements with minimal effort. Moveable storage towers and caster chairs provide additional flexibility. Electronic communications, including wireless voice and data, enable team work with full technological access in any location.

The director's office maintains a degree of privacy in this otherwise open atmosphere through the use of a partial height wall composed of gypsum board and tempered glass. The kitchen/lounge area is casual in nature, serving both meeting and dining functions. Curved screens of perforated aluminum can divide this space. Lounge amenities include a sofa and chairs, an air hockey table, and a striking view of the city's new baseball stadium, PNC Park.
