The ground floor of a renovated midrise
was converted to accommodate the corporate headquarters of
this recently formed, Dallas-based new cinema developer and
film exhibitor. The design solution includes the use of translucent
perimeter partitions, sliding planes in lieu of conference
doors, and spaces designed according to the conditions of
the time of day and weather and the effects of light and space
rather than mass.
A perimeter ring of private workspaces
surrounds a central area containing reception, media gathering,
shared conference, and executive support spaces. This central
zone, enlivened by its irregularity and qualities of changing
light, contains objects, disengaged from the grid of the original
space with their own geometry, based on function and method
of construction. Other major elements follow the primary orthogonal
system of the building structure. Wall and millwork details
further illustrate the relationship between the two geometries
of the space. Light penetrates through overlapping shapes
and materials changing with time and weather. Modest materials
were selected for color, texture, light transmission or reflectance,
and signage, logo, and overall image presentation were also
provided by the architect.
