GE5

Memphis, Tennessee
archimania

A simple concrete masonry exterior blends the GE5 townhouses in with the surrounding historic industrial architecture.

archimania’s main goal with the GE5 townhouses was to carefully blend the building with the existing traditional architecture of downtown Memphis. Set in an area that was once mostly industrial warehouses and brick storefronts, now converted into lofts, galleries, and commercial space, the GE5 design flirts between modern and historic architecture. The result is a clean design that captures the interchange between old and new.

The exterior polished concrete masonry unit mass is punctuated by galvanized metal bays with aluminum and glass storefront. These splayed and projecting bays help delineate the units as five separate townhouses. Smooth-face concrete masonry units on the interior walls between each townhouse add warmth in the relation of the materials to the structure. This divider serves as a fire and bearing wall. The rear and sides of the units are also clad in smooth-face concrete masonry and reflects the industrial history of the surrounding area.

The three-story townhouses each contain a two-car garage on the main level, and are designed as live-work units. These units offer a variety of options for street level use, which can be utilized as an office, gallery, or retail space. The interior of the second and third residential floors offers open space to the areas above; skylights and a two-story open area allow light into the upper floors.
