This modest-sized pavilion stands
as a beacon to those entering the Block Island harbor and
is on axis with the path of the ferry. Sponsored by the Ocean
View Foundation, Inc., it is dedicated to bringing an environmental
awareness to the Island's 800 residents and the tens of thousands
of summer visitors who come to visit in the summer months.
It is open to the public with access on foot by pathways and
has become a destination for walkers to stop and enjoy the
views of the ocean and town in a tranquil setting.
The Pavilion is boat-like in its shape
and the curved roof structure is reminiscent of old wooden
boat frames. A steel annular ring section required for hurricane
code requirements provides support for the wooden roof structure.
Ipe decking was used for durability.
The interior is designed to accommodate
seating for daytime and evening educational seminars. Niches
and seating have been created outside under the hovering roof
structure for protection from the sun. These are discrete,
micro-spaces, affording privacy.
The solar powered photovoltaic roof
shingles provide electricity for slide projections and serve
as an example of the commitment of the Foundation to alternative
energy. The roof system is made of reclaimed barn rafters
and roofing boards. This and the recycled cobblestone paving
around the pavilion reinforce the concept of sustainability
in promoting recycled materials. The site is landscaped with
meandering pathways leading to this peaceful sanctuary.
