The new, 76,500-seat Invesco Field at
Mile High is located adjacent to the site of the now-leveled
50-year-old original Mile High Stadium. This four-level, modern
facility features natural grass, open-air, and can accommodate
a variety of events.
Completed in August of 2001, the design
incorporates much of what has been learned about stadium architecture
in the past decade. The six levels include a field level,
main concourse, club level, suite level, and lower and upper
decks. The facility combines state-of-the-art technology with
traditional aspects of the old facility, including its classic
horseshoe-shape, the closeness of the seats to the field,
and the use of steel risers and treads to create a deafening
noise to rattle the opposing team.
The upper portion of the stadium is wrapped
in a silver aluminum skin, giving it a sleek, futuristic appearance.
Instead of being sited in the midst of an asphalt sea of parking
lots, it is situated within a park-like setting that incorporates
numerous green spaces and public gathering areas. It extends
Denvers South Platte River Park, connecting the new
site to the parks bike paths and walking trails.
