An American architect takes a humanistic approach at a Chinese research park.
Zhangjiang Semiconductor Research Park was designed and built to attract technology and research companies to the heart of Shanghai’s high-tech district. Eighty research facilities, encompassing 2.4 million square feet, are situated along the Lu Jia Bang River across 118 acres. The research park features state-of-the-art flexible lab and office spaces surrounded by a garden-style green office environment.

In developing the master plan, MulvannyG2 incorporated the “SOHO” concept—Small Office/Home Office—to take a humanistic approach to the research park. Buildings are grouped into five international-themed communities: “Seattle,” “Florence,” “Munich,” “New York Central Park,” and “Shanghai Riverfront.” Each community includes a green open space that connects to a central park by either green belt or creek. Each building is also situated on open space.
The client incorporated 57 acres of preserved open space into the park. Water diverted from a river that circulates the park is used to create waterfalls, fountains, and creeks. A pedestrian walkway network and minimal surface parking encourage pedestrian traffic on campus. Companies share a spacious communal eating area and convention space.
Configured to maximize views of the natural surroundings, modular units of various sizes provide flexible, portable spaces. Operable windows allow natural ventilation and shallow floor plates and two to three-story atriums increase daylighting. The top floors house meeting spaces and sleeping quarters, a convenient amenity for employees and their families visiting from out of town.
Construction has been completed on all of the research facility’s 80 buildings. The research park is 80 percent occupied, hosting such international and domestic enterprises as AMD, Infosys, 51job.com, Cetecom, Shanghai Foreign Exchange Center and the Shanghai Security Exchange Center.
