Program: A 21,853-square-foot school designed for children with learning disabilities.
Design concept and solution: The architects converted the upper two stories of a former parking space into a school designed to engage students with special needs. Hallway alcoves and multipurpose gathering areas enable teachers to interact with students outside of the traditional classroom setting. A central stair connects the two-level school and also serves as a lounge and a theater with a retracting projection screen. Bamboo and cork, recycled steel, wood, and drywall, and a radiant floor heating system contributed to the schools’ sustainability.
Gross square footage: 21,853 sq. ft.
Total construction cost: $11,000,000
