Program: A 47,225-square-foot middle school sited on a 16-acre campus.
Design concept and solution: The architects symbolically situated the new middle school in the center of the lower and upper schools—both built in 1928—to represent its intermediary function on the historic campus. Set on a former basketball court and service yard, the middle school is composed of three rectilinear forms conjoined by a wood veneer paneled common area. Native stone excavated from the site forms the base of the building. A glazed curtainwall encloses the classroom volume to suffuse learning spaces with natural light; zinc-composite panels clad the academic center. Features like the third floor roof garden and rainwater-collecting cistern that collects water for local irrigation contributed to the schools’ LEED Silver certification.
