Program: A school set on over 10 acres with 5,770 square feet of new construction and 23,516 square feet of renovated space.
Design concept and solution: The Brunswick Upper School was once a single-room schoolhouse in the early 20th century, but had undergone many transformations to accommodate a growing student population. Over the decades, new architectonic styles and materials, resulting in a hodgepodge campus, marked each new addition. The architects unified the campus by linking the disjunctive buildings with a two-story glass walkway, creating a continuous means of circulation between the campus buildings. The architects retrofitted the existing gymnasium to accommodate a 400-seat auditorium and a black box theater; former locker rooms now serve as art studios.
