Program: A 30,000-square-foot science building with classrooms and labs, a science display atrium, a 130-seat lecture hall, faculty offices, outdoor classroom, and campus data center.
Design concept and solution: A new L-shaped science building connects via a glazed entryway to an existing academic building to create a learning center that exemplifies sustainability. The pre-cast concrete base, water-struck brick, metal windows, and roofing were selected for durability. The interior features renewable and recycled materials such as recycled glass aggregate terrazzo flooring, recycled wood fiber acoustical ceilings and mineral fiber, and recycled glass ceramic tiles in the restrooms. Additional sustainable features include passive solar designed south-facing classrooms and labs, generous glazing for daylighting, and a green roof.
