A modest budget did not inhibit the design of this innovative and colorful studio

This executive search firm was looking for offices that would offer upbeat, flexible, and open areas, as well as private suites and meeting spaces. The project needed to anticipate future growth with spaces designed to satisfy a multiplicity of uses and respond to the parameters of a tight budget. Furthermore, sound isolation and visual privacy were extremely important.

The architect developed a partition system that could be quickly and easily assembled and changed. A forest of columns supporting floating panels transforms the raw open space into a variety of useable spaces: private offices, meeting rooms, conference rooms and open work areas. The columns are made from structural fiberglass, Extren 525. Lightweight and hollow in section, the columns not only support the sandwich of materials that make up the office partitions, they also serve as a chase for both data and electric lines.

A panel system of medium-density fiberboard nailed to a modular plywood frame spans between Extren columns. Panels are color-coded according to location and function and then covered with Homasote wrapped in vibrantly colored and richly textured fabrics that reduce ambient noise. Gaps between the fabric panels reveal the painted surface beneath. The result is a rich interplay of pattern, color, and texture.

Acoustics and aesthetics are married in the choice of finishes. Humble fluorescent fixtures are dressed with the patented um felt light baffles, which diffuse the light as well as dampen noise and sculpt the overhead plane into a glowing, soft sculpture. Carpeting and rubber flooring were also selected for their acoustical properties, while the design brings the play of color and texture to floor surface and reinforces the spatial coding of the partition system.
