Studio Roundhouse is an industrial/package
design firm specializing in the design and manufacture of
CD cases, backpacks, motorcycle helmets, and personal carrying
products. The architect adapted space in an existing brick
warehouse to create three private offices for the firms
principals, sixteen designers workstations, one prototype
room, a conference area, design pin-up area, and small gallery
to highlight the firms work. The designers of Studio
Roundhouse graduated from the Art Center, designed by the
famed Los Angeles architect, Craig Ellwood. They loved the
schools clarity and simplicity and wished to have a
similarly clean and simple design that was also highly organized.
As much diffused natural light as possible
is harnessed through translucent, laminated glass workstations.
These are open, airy, and light and promote an environment
of team work, yet they maintain privacy for the designers.
The central core of workstations, the boat of rowers as it
is called, was painstakingly analyzed to insure comfort and
creativity given budget limitations. Light natural birch plywood
veneers were used. A floating cabinet was designed to both
store materials and provide barriers between stations. It
was important to the principals that the space always have
a "neat" look. While each Roundhouse designer customizes
his or her own workstation, the space maintains a consistent
and homogeneous appearance.
