Grant/Fulton Recital Hall
A carriage house becomes an intimate performance space for a university.
Grant Recital Hall was placed within the masonry shell of a small existing carriage house on Brown University’s campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Adjacent to Orwig Hall, which houses the school’s Music Department on the east side of campus, Grant Recital Hall is an intimate 135-seat venue for the department’s presentation of chamber music, electronic music, and smaller jazz combos.

Brian Healy Architects exposed the entire volume of the carriage house and inserted two distinct wall systems within the space to enhance the acoustic performance of the hall. The sidewalls were shaped with a plaster and wood scrim to modulate the sound within the space and conceal mechanical systems. A perforated bamboo screen surrounds the stage to allow for sound to either reverberate off the masonry shell or be absorbed by retractable felt banners behind the openings.
The specific progression through the spaces—along with improved sightlines—promotes interaction between the performers and the audience, whether in a classroom or performance setting. A new entry, lobby and reception area, musician’s room, and other general support spaces all support the recital hall.
